Severs disease is acommon problem of the pediatric foot that most commonly affects boys from the ages of 10-15 years. It is considered an overuse type and that occurs more commonly in more active children. Calcaneal apophysitis is the technical or medical term for the condition. Pain is usually felt at the back of the heel, especially when the heal is squeezed.

Up to the age of 14 or 15 it is possible to strain the small piece of cartilage between the pieces of bone at the back of the heel bone, resulting in something that is similar to a stress fracture. This is common in those who are more active, in those with tight calf muscles and in those with flat or pronated feet. Sports like soccer and tennis are also commonly incolved, as the grounds can be quite hard.

Severs disease treatment usually consists of some sort of activity modification or modified rest to cut back on the level of sports activities; the use of heel raises to cushion the heel; and foot orthotics are sometimes used to correct foot alignment. Sometimes strapping or tape is used.

If anyone thinks they may have severs disease, then health professional advice should be sort before attempting self treatment.
