It is caused when the cuboid bone is unstable. When the peroneal muscles from the leg contract, the tendons that use the cuboid as a pulley will tend to try and sublux it. This movement strains the joint around the cubid. Those runners with a pronated foot are much more likely to get this problem. Unsupportive running shoes are also thought to be a factor in cuboid syndrome.

A common symptom of this is an ache on the outside of the foot that gets worse with running. If treatment is not started then the pain gets progressively worse and to the stage where it usually interferes in the runners training.

The standard treatment is usually some sort of pain relief with ice. Cuboid manipulation is usually need to put the subluxed cuboid back into place. Often strapping is used to help stabilize the cuboid so there is less strain on the joints. After that foot orthotics are usually needed long term to help support the foot and make the cuboid bone more stable. After this a gradual return to full running levels.

It is important to seek health professional advice if you think you may have this problem.
