The terminology of Negative Model Production is being used instead of casting or negative casting. In order to make a foot orthotic, then some sort of model of the foot is needed. There are many ways to do this compared to what was available in the past. Some of these methods are not new, but are increasing in popularity (eg foam box casting) and some rely on new technology (eg digital scanning). The term ‘eye balling’ is also a method of modelling the foot before using a prefabricated foot orthotic.
