Business Networking Tips – Clear the Trees
This excerpt is from the upcoming book: Face-to-Face Networking Skills

All of the information and resources you need to be successful are within your reach, just waiting to be discovered. We can get so busy and single minded on one part of our business that we ‘can’t see the forest for the trees’. A good PowerPartner looks out for you and recognizes opportunities, then shares them with you. They are invaluable. I know this from personal experience. Recently, one of my PowerPartners forwarded the email of a resource to me along with her thoughts on how I might use that resource. I knew about it. In fact, I had received the very same email that morning. But I was really busy at the time. I had so many ‘trees’ in front of my that I couldn’t see the ‘forest’ or the application that she saw for me. I took action and the result was huge, MASSIVE. I’m so happy and grateful that she took a quick moment to share the opportunity with me… A Good PowerPartner Has Your Back. You can find an excellent PowerPartner at your local Business Networking Groups.
Peter Shankman (of HARO) on the misuse of Facebook
This guy is Awesome! Even though I get 3 emails a day, each taking several minutes to read. I never miss one. (his “open rate” on nearly 50k subscribers is to die for!) “He is redefining the art of networking” is how PR Magazine has described Peter Shankman. Peter is so funny… a marathon-running, skydiving, hyper-active PR specialist and social media addict who lives with two cats (NASA and Karma). He started HARO (Help a reporter out). HARO is an unique business networking website. The three or so emails a day contain inquires from reporters looking for sources. I was in a national magazine as an expert! Most importantly, I know many people who are experts on many topics. I usually forward several queries every week. Some people I have forwarded to have actually made it to print! HARO is one of my favorites because it matches the philosophy I teach; be a hub through which information flows. Go to HARO.com and subscribe today. Then start forwarding queries to the ‘experts’ you know. Perhaps it will be their “big break”. Just follow his simple rules.
I’m introducing Peter because I wanted to share this article he wrote on the misuse of Facebook Invitations. Go to shankman.com to read the article. My feelings exactly. Even though Facebook and LinkedIn are business networking sites. Does being someone’s connection on LinkedIn or FB imply that I want to be added to their marketing promotions? Most of the time they’ve also added me to their email/announcement list, (How’d I end up there?) so the FB invites are duplicates. I’ll wager this is happening on LinkedIn and FaceBook. I received this LinkedIn message recently: “Please vote for my Mom. She has signed up for the “I Believe” contest to win a trip to the Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade.” Sorry…no. Enjoy HARO & the article!
